One of the main objectives, when we start designing our digital marketing strategy, is to improve our SEO positioning in search engines, we need to reach the top positions for our keywords, we want to attract thousands of visits to our website. For this, we must be clear about what they are and our SEO objectives (sell a product, branding, promote personal image …) to perform a correct SEO positioning strategy.
The first thing to talk about SEO or SEO positioning, is precisely to know what is its meaning, we call SEO or “Search Engine Optimization” to the positioning in search engines, for which we will use different techniques to improve the visibility of our website in the organic results of the different search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing …). Currently, SEO is not an exact science, and it tends to vary or be updated every certain period. Although there are several search engines, we are going to focus on Google, since it is the most used search engine for now, with more than 80% of users.
The positioning of our website is an issue to which we usually pay close attention to, but actions are not always carried out to help improve SEO or, if they are carried out, sometimes not in the most correct way. Undoubtedly, we must always be attentive to the rules set by Google to contribute to the positioning of our website.
The SEO for our website is very important, and the need to work on our website to achieve our goal is key, positioning ourselves on the first page of Google is a long-distance race, and we should not despair. Thanks to SEO we have the opportunity for users to find you through the search engines.
Before starting to explain a few steps to improve your SEO positioning, you should know that there are hundreds of factors that affect the positioning of a website in search engines, but we must highlight two above the others, which are the relevance and authority of your website.
We use the term relevance to the relationship that your website has with a search of a user in the search engine, to those factors we will consider it SEO on a page. And we will call authority to the popularity of a web page, this factor the search engines have a lot in mind since it is based on the user experience, to these factors we will consider them SEO off the page.
Tips to enhance the SEO of your website
Here I leave a few factors that will help you better position your website in the search engines:
1. Your website must be 100% responsive
Currently, what Google values most about a web page is that it can be viewed correctly on all mobile devices, without this requirement Google will not take you into account.
2. Meta description and title
You must define a description and title for each heading, where you must include as many keywords as possible.
3. Friendly URLs
You will have to avoid that the URLs of your website contain strange characters like: “$#”, You will have to change the URL to optimize them with the title of the page without overextending the length that the URL is.
4. Use of keywords
You have to choose your keywords well and use them in your texts, categories, and labels. Make sure you use keywords in the first 200 words of each page. You must also use keywords in the titles and bold so that you will facilitate the work to Google.
5. Original content
You must always have original and relevant content on your website, and Google penalizes duplicate content. If you also have a blog on your website, the length of the articles must be over 300 words for Google to take you into account, although I advise over 800 or 900 words to position well in the search engines. Also, you must not exceed 60 characters for the title of the post.
6. Labels H1, H2 and H3
You must structure the tags H1, H2, and H3 correctly. We will use the H1 for the content title since Google recognizes our contents through the H1 tag, so it is important to include keywords in the titles. The H2 to indicate the subsections and the H3 onwards we will use it if we need to indicate more subsections within the text, although the most important is the H1 and H2 labels.
7. Optimization of images
You will have to be careful with the size of your images and avoid that the images have a greater weight than necessary. You must also include ALT and TITLE tags in all the images so that search engines can index them. You will also include a keyword in the name of the image file so that you can get well positioned in Google images.
8. Internal and external links
One of the factors that take into account by Google is the internal and external links that you have on your website, so you should avoid having broken links and malicious or illegal links (viruses, spam…). The internal links help you to spread the contents of your website and the external links help us get more authority and improve your page rank.
9. Reduce loading time
You have a maximum of 5 seconds for your website to upload the content since it is the average time a user decides to stay on your website or not. If you reduce the load time, your bounce rate and user experience will improve considerably.
10. Publish periodically
All these tips that you just read will not work if your website is not alive and updated, you must have continuously entertained the “spider” of Google, and for that, you must publish content at least once a week.
